Tag You're It! Are Your Connections Still Inside Your Camera?

Click on the Picture to See the Tagging Party in Action

You go to a seminar or event, and you take what seems to be a million pictures with the speakers and attendees that are there. So what do you do with those pictures? Do you take action and post them on your Facebook profile, with all the people tagged, while you're still at the seminar? Or do you promise yourself (and others) that you'll do that as soon as you get home?

What usually happens when choosing the latter situation, is you get home and the pictures don't even make it off the camera. Or… you download them off your camera, and they still take days, weeks, even months to make it to your Facebook profile. By then, half the people don't even remember who you are (or you don't remember who they are).

People love it when others remember their name, and they also love it when the pictures they volunteered their time for are actually posted with their name attached. And if you want to contact them later for help or to joint venture with them… do you think they'd be more willing to say yes if they felt you actually took the time and effort to acknowledge them before? We're pretty sure they would.

You asked people to have a picture taken with you for a reason… and you've made the connection with them. Don't lose that through procrastination on posting your pictures. In fact, they will be tickled pink if they go back to their room at the seminar and find the picture they took with you a few short hours earlier was already online.

Here's what someone wrote to us, and a few others, after finding out her picture was posted and tagged when she got home from the seminar…

Your business is about relationships… and you need to be diligent in maintaining those connections you've made. Making sure you post and tag your pictures as soon as possible after you've taken them is one way of strengthening that connection.

We also understand how much of a challenge it can be to remember who all the people are that you've connected with, and to know where to keep in touch with them. We have a system for doing just that, and it works amazingly well.

To see how we organize and manage our connections, Go Here!

So when it comes to staying connected and maintaining relationships, one very COOL step is to take action and get those photos posted!

What Do Facebook and Chocolate Have in Common?

You're a success! You have all the knowledge and tools you need to make a difference in peoples' lives… something to offer the world. Whether it's how to make a first-rate Facebook Page or homemade chocolate that is to die for, there is something you know that will help others.

All you need now is guidance on how to spread your message… the knowledge you possess that others can benefit from. So find someone with the knowledge of how to get your message out, and learn from them. You owe it to the world to spread the knowledge you have, to allow others to experience it as well.

You may not see yourself as successful. You may feel that you aren't making enough money from what you know, or that what you know is of no value to others. Look at it this way… if it's of value to you, it must be of value to someone else. As human beings, we are not that much different.

Your knowledge may not directly bring you millions of dollars… but it can lead to other things which may… and in any case, if you can help one person it is a success.

Success depends on your perspective. Look for and find the successes in your life, and celebrate them. By focusing on your successes, you'll be sure to create more.

We Learned Something from Jimmy Kimmel?

Here's Johnny! Oops, we mean Jimmy. Jimmy Kimmel… the late-night talk show host (and comedian) who had previously declared Twitter war with us on his TV show, Jimmy Kimmel Live, and on Twitter.

It was an interesting, fun and very cool experience… and one that we learned a lot from as well.

What exactly did we learn?
This is what we learned:

1. Branding is important.

Having a brand that people can associate you with is very important. Unless you are extremely famous and everybody knows your name, having a brand that's different, something people can relate to or remember easily, and even something fun, will go a long way in getting you noticed by others.

Once you develop a brand you need to make sure that everything you do is through that brand. The more you put your brand out there, the more people will remember it and the more people will get to see it. It's also a good thing to tie it into your tweets and postings on Facebook… just a word here and there that relates to your brand.

Another thing we found is that it really helps to have a brand that fits you. If it is a brand that you can't relate to, or just doesn't speak to who you are, then you are less likely to use it to the fullest… and a lot of people will notice the disconnect and not buy into it. Find something you can be comfortable with. After all, you will be promoting yourself through this brand.

2. It doesn't happen overnight.

We've been working on our Twitter relationships for two years… following people, tweeting, getting involved in Twitter groups, re-tweeting, and building a lot of relationships. Usually, unless there's extenuating circumstances like having your own TV show, getting up to 57,000 followers takes time.

So the secret… get on Twitter and build relationships. Get involved. That doesn't mean you have to be on Twitter 24/7 either. A little bit here and there connecting with people goes a long way. As well, you can take advantage of auto-tweet programs, such as HootSuite. But use the auto-tweet programs as a compliment to personally connecting… don't use them for everything you do on Twitter.

3. Communicate with your followers.

One thing that was mentioned by Jimmy's followers as well as ours was that Jimmy wasn't on Twitter talking to them. Again, social media, no matter which site you're on, is all about relationships. We even got a few of Jimmy's followers to switch sides because we were actually talking to them.

4. Don't take it personally.

Because our name and picture were seen by a lot of people, we got a lot of not-so-complimentary comments; we just didn't take any of them to heart. You are not going to be liked or put in a good light by everyone. The interesting thing is that nearly all of the people who don't have anything nice to say about you, don't even know you at all. So what do they base their comments on? They make it up.

To get noticed you need to stick your head above the sand… and some people will take that opportunity to use it as "target practice". Criticism and detrimental comments are part of life, but one that we don't need to buy into.

Social media can be a lot of fun, while meeting a lot of cool people at the same time. You never know who you'll meet and what crazy and interesting experiences you'll have along the way.

Leave us a comment on what you've learned about social media and getting noticed online… and some challenges you've had in that regard as well. We'd love to hear about it!

Jimmy Kimmel Vs. The Coolest Couple – It Was War… On the Twitter Battleground!

Before you read any further, please follow us at: http://Twitter.com/Pat_Lorna (Opens in a new window). It will make sense to you when you read the rest of this story…

It was war (twat-wa) ! In case you haven't heard… Jimmy Kimmel (of ABC's Jimmy Kimmel Live!) had declared Twitter War on us (actually it was more like a sneak attack). He was not happy that we had 4,000 more followers than he did, so he publicly declared (on Twitter and on his show) that he was officially at Twitter War with us.

Here's how he started it all:
(Click above image to see the actual Tweet)

(Click above image to see the actual Tweet)

And… here is the video of him announcing his Twitter war with us on his show:

Now, why he chose us to go to war with isn't clear… and truthfully that's OK; it's great PR and we didn't back down from his challenge. We spent a couple of days (and nights) tweeting with our followers and his as well. The amount of people that now know who we are, compared to before Jimmy started this war, has skyrocketed. So bring it on Jimmy!

Are we sure it's great PR? Yes, and we're not alone in that thinking…

So, how do you get noticed online (and offline too)?

Yes, getting noticed online often leads to offline publicity as well. People telling their friends about you, meeting people in person that you've connected with online (our favorite), and sometimes a mention and your picture on TV…

Here's a quick video of Jimmy on his show, updating his audience on the status of his Twitter War with us:

So… how to get noticed online:
First, you have to get out there. Put up a blog, get on Facebook and Twitter. It doesn't have to be perfect, you'll have lots of time to tweak it later.

Second, create a brand for yourself and then create everything you do around that brand. Your brand can help you stand out from the crowd and have more staying power in people's minds.

Third, it's a great idea to join a tribe or become a part of a community. The people in your tribe will be instrumental in getting your name out there, increasing your exposure on the social media sites and the reach of your content. Being a part of Tribe Syndication Association (TSA) has dramatically increased our reach and exposure in the world of social media and online in general.

So get out there, create something that's yours and get the help and support of tribe behind you. You'll be surprised how far you can go.

We didn't think we'd actually win the war, considering Jimmy has the network TV show to get his message out to the world. And although we didn't win, we'd like to thank Jimmy Kimmel for helping us get a little farther. It's been a COOL ride, and Jimmy's a pretty COOL guy for a "comedian"!

We hope that you are now following  us on Twitter: http://Twitter.com/Pat_Lorna (Opens in a new window). Thank you!

P.S. Watch out Jimmy, the "Pat and Lorna Live!" show is coming soon to a network near you!

P.S.S. Or maybe Jimmy you want us to appear live on your show first!

Learning, Growing, Responsibilities and Increasing Your Circle of Influence

It's amazing to see the transformation and how it applies to our involvement in Social Media.

Our daughter just turned 16 and went to get her driver's license. She was very nervous and somewhat stressed out at the thought of "a test". So she set her sights on the prize at the other end (her license), took the test, and passed!

If we take a look back at what it was like for her before she even had her learner's license, it was something like this… she was dependent on her parents, brothers, friends' parents, the transit system or her feet to get her where she wanted to go. The amount of times she could get out and socialize was limited. Her circle of influence (her friends and social life) was in turn, limited.

Just like in Social Media… we start out on Twitter, Facebook, etc. with a few followers and friends, but we don't really have the knowledge, tools and confidence to really spread our social networking reach. At least, not yet.

Then came the learner's license… more responsibility and two years of learning and building confidence. Yes, she still had to have someone in the car with her, but her influence with us, her parents, was higher as we wanted her to have as much exposure to driving as possible so that she would have the skills and confidence to get her driver's license at the end of it all. As well, the learner's license made it possible for her to take driver training… an opportunity to get the additional knowledge and confidence to reach her goal.

It's Amazing What You Can Accomplish When You're Connected

Yes, it is definitely COOL to connect with friends and be a social butterfly on the social network sites. Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and other social networks are cost effective (free) sites… which makes connecting with your friends that much more fun.

Think about this… what if you could build your list, get more customers and even find some joint venture partners on the same sites you visit with your friends and followers? Well, you can.

Be warned though, social networks still need to be social. That means you do not go on these sites and continually push your sites, blogs, products or services. You need to build rapport with the people who connect with you on these sites… build some solid relationships.

Offer up some free advice or information on your topic of expertise… help other people first and become the expert in their eyes. Once you've done that, people will be a lot more receptive to you offering up what you are selling. Still… even once you've got the relationships built, the majority of your tweets, posts, etc. need to be social or about helping others.

Facebook's Major Redesign

In case you haven't already noticed (where have you been?), Facebook has been rolling out major changes to its design. And if you're wondering why… Facebook is celebrating its sixth birthday with a dramatic redesign of their homepage that millions of people see when they log on each day.

The focus of these changes are to emphasize search, applications and games.

Key changes to the design include:

  • The top menu.
  • The search box (powered by Microsoft) is more prominent.
  • Notifications, including friend requests and comment notifications are more prominent.
  • The navigation of the left side of the page has been enhanced to promote content; including the News Feed, Events, Photos and which friends are online.
  • Manage privacy settings and log out using the Account menu in the upper right-hand corner of the screen.
  • And of course… a whole lot more.

These are well-planned changes designed to improve navigation and the use of the commonly-used features.

You can learn more about these design changes at Facebook's blog:

Let us know what you think of these Facebook changes with your comments below.

And last, but not least, are we connected on Facebook yet? You can…
